Male the capital is considered a pride by many and a menace by the rest. If you happen to be born in a rural island you will grow up perceiving the place is sacred. It is fine if you think the same since its the capital of the Maldives. But I am scared to death from the time I heard about the crack on the coral-bedrock of Male. The other day a friend sarcastically joked; All we need is a big enough needle. Those scientists from Australia who are investigating the wound can stitch the place in no time.
We will in future live in a few facilitated population centres around the country. It is often boasted even by people who wont believe it can happen. Not so obvious, but often projected idea is we will all live in Males. All of us will have life as great as in Male. Like if life in Male is a life, so to say.
Lets call Male an island city, assuming that Male is our equal of cities in main-land nations. Male suffers form all diseases that cities does. Everyone who lives in Male has a reason why he/she doesn’t like life in Male. It doesn’t matter who you ask. Everyone wants everything in the opposite way of how we have it in Male’ as of now.
May I suggest then what you actually want are island townships. Not island cities! Since, no one thinks we are civilised enough and can ever be as long as we live in islands.
I for one, all I need is a dignified livelihood in a place I can belong myself without alienation and worries that society and bedrock might crack at anytime.

Thank you Subcorpus. I think our new development zones should never turn into places like Male’. But townships, which are pro better LIFE more than better business. What do you think?

Shahur, I think it would be a good idea to have a few Male’s in our country. They could be Hanimaale, Fonamaale, Thinamaale, Addumaale. And each of them can have its own municipality. These maale’s will have all facilities that we seek in Furamaale, in addition to Hulhumaale.
Imagine, the possibilities!

Yes, Shihab. I don’t see a problem copying the name tag, and dividing zones to that effect. I sense serious problems that are strategically detrimental within Male’s development model. We can and should find a fine line that will integrate island life with developed infrastructure that will allow sustainable development.

i was born in male’ (central hospital) and grewup there.. but ive been exposed to island life from a very young age as relatives/family friends live in the northern atoll and kaafu atoll.i wud prefer island life.male’ life have advantages like old friends…and good public services.but island life is what i want to live.male’ is dangerous, male’ is toxic, male’ is congested male’ sux! its just the opposite of what meynaa hassaanu says.ive even made a spoof of that song sometime back.
and about that crack… i heard that,ERC and some japanese research group have warned about… they made it very clear that building the hulhumale’ ferry terminal in that area was dangerous . but what to do… still the old ‘neru govvun’ kinda thinkin. thet did it.
